Understanding your FLHA · Lesson 3 of 11

What do I write under "task" on an FLHA?

On an FLHA, or Field Level Hazard Assessment, the task line describes what you will do, what you will work with, where, and what you will use.

FLHA · Their form so far
Task This lesson What are we doing?
Site conditions What is the work area like today? Lesson 4
Permits, tickets & plans Does today's work need a permit, ticket, inspection or plan? Lesson 5
Hazards What could hurt someone? Lesson 6

After the form

  1. Before work starts Make sure the controls are done. Lesson 9
  2. If something changes Look at the form again. Lesson 10

Role and task are different

Role is who you are on the crew. For example, general labourer.

Task is what you will do today. For example, moving boxes from the loading area into room 3 using a cart.

Your role may stay the same while your tasks change. The task line on an FLHA asks about today's work, not your job title.

Two ways to write the task

Not enough

Moving boxes

Why: "Moving boxes" could mean many jobs. The crew can't tell where the boxes are going, or how.

Better

Moving boxes from the loading area into room 3 using a cart

Why: Now the crew can picture the job. They can think about the route, like the hallway where other workers are walking.

What are you doing?
Moving
What are you working with?
Boxes
Where is it going?
From the loading area into room 3
What will you use?
A cart

If today's task isn't clear, your supervisor can help before you fill in the form.

On your next FLHA

Before you write, try answering the four questions out loud. Then put your answers into one line.

This is general information. It does not replace employer procedures, site rules, or regulations.
